The introduction of the R Series in 2012 not only brought KEF's new UniQ technology designed for the Blade model to an affordable price point, but also introduced exceptional build and finish quality too.

From a tonal point of view, you can hear the R Series comes from the same family as the Blade and Reference models. Bass quantity and depth that belie their dimensions, smooth midrange reproduction, and detailed but inoffensive high frequencies - all designed around the 'apparent point source' approach of the KEF Blade loudspeakers.

This approach lends each model of the R Series equally well to both stereo music reproduction as well as the home cinema experience.

Magnetic grilles complete the clean external look, allowing the range to look just as good without grilles as with.

UniQ two-way array

Originally introduced in 1988 with the C Series, KEF's dual concentric UniQ technology has now had 30 years of improvement and refinement, resulting in the current technology used throughout their loudspeaker ranges, from the Q Series, through R Series and Reference, right through to the Blade and Muon models.

KEF's UniQ array allows midrange and high frequencies right down to 500Hz to emanate from a single point rather than two distinctly separate points. This improves imaging and focus, and removes issues associated with the usual vertical driver array of most speakers. It's basically taking the d'Appolito arrangement, improving it, and producing its benefits throughout 360 degrees rather than just vertically.

The midrange cone also acts as a waveguide for the HF unit, controlling high frequency dispersion, reducing reflections from side walls, ceilings, and floors, helping you to hear more of your speaker's natural output and less of the room's interference.

The R700 speakers are a three-way design, utilising a 1" aluminium HF unit and a 5" midrange driver in a UniQ array, covering all frequencies from 500Hz upwards.

Above and below this UniQ driver are a pair of 6.5" bass drivers, providing all frequencies below 500Hz. Using such a small bass driver allows a slimline cabinet to be used. Adding a second bass driver enhances output capability and bass depth, and also allows the perceived acoustic centre of the two bass drivers to be located in the same place as the UniQ array - producing an "apparent point source" design.

Each bass driver is mounted into its own section of the cabinet, each with a port, allowing options with regards to experimenting with the supplied foam bungs in order to get the best results for your listening space.

Along with the compact and very capable R400b subwoofer and the unobtrusive R800ds on-wall surround speakers, the addition of the R50a upfiring Atmos speaker module now allows the R Series flexibility enough to cover all system types, including a fully immersive home theatre speaker system.

Even greater flexibility is offered when incorporating in-ceiling or in-wall options to match the R Series.

The floorstanding R700 model is a three-way, dual rear ported design. This is to fully utilise the rear wall's influence in producing the strong, deep bass response throughout the range, and also removes any possibility of midrange frequencies leaking from a front port - this would undo all the work gone into making the R700 a predominantly "point source" loudspeaker, and spoiling the uncluttered front fascia.

The luxurious gloss finish of the black or white finish will suit modern rooms and furniture, whereas the smooth, satin finish of the rosewood or walnut real wood veneer finishes will help blend in to more with classic looking surroundings.
