The Optoma UHZ65 home theatre projector uses Texas Instruments' digital DLP technology (Digital Light Processing). This technology was developed over 30 years ago, and has been used in cinemas since 1999.

DLP has always had superior black levels in comparison to competing technologies, and a higher contrast ratio too, bringing a solidity to a picture that the likes of LCD just can't match.

Whilst the UHD65 isn't a native 4K projector, it does accept a full UHD signal, which is the first step to showing better resolution. The signal is then downscaled to the panel's native resolution (2716x1528), then 'pixel shifted' back up to 4K. This adds greater sharpness than projectors that can only accept 1080. The main difference with the UHD65 over other pixel shift UHD projectors is that its pixels are indeed as small as those used in genuine 4K projectors, rather than twice the size as used in many other projectors. This is another step towards showing better resolution than many other claimed 4K projectors.

The major difference between the UHD65 and UHZ65 is that UHZ65 uses laser light for projection rather than a conventional lamp. Laser light allows a much brighter 3,000 lumens instead of 2,200, and almost doubling the contrast ratio to 2,000,000:1, giving more accurate colour reproduction and better detail, particularly in darker areas of the screen, producing a much more vivid image.

Lamps give up to 5,000 hours of varying output, but laser projection gives 20,000 hours of consistent performance.

High Dynamic Range is another benefit of UHD technology that helps to reproduce a more lifelike image. When used with non HDR material, the UHZ65 will convert to HDR to enhance colour and contrast.

This standard is supported by many manufacturers, including Sony and Microsoft, and is a compatible feature of Playstation 4 and Xbox One S gaming consoles.

isf calibration allows for correct calibration of your image, in order for it to show correct colour, contrast, brightness etc in comparison to the natural ambient light level of the room. Presets allow you to store different light level settings, for day or night viewing, for example. This allows the very best possible reproduction - the visual equivalent of tuning a race car.

The Optoma UHZ65 home cinema projector has two HDMI inputs (one being HDMI2.2), a VGA input, a 3.5mm audio input jack, a 3.5mm audio output jack, and optical SPDIF digital output, an RJ45/ethernet connection, an RS232 connection, a 12volt trigger, and a USB-A socket which is MHL compatible, allowing the direct connection of smart phones and tablets to be displayed on the screen.
