The Red 50 is a lively little performer, ideal for small to medium size spaces.

Russell K at the little audio company

The Russell K Red 50 is a compact bookshelf loudspeaker ideal for small to medium size spaces, producing an expansive soundstage with an evenly balanced frequency response.

Russell K's approach is to keep things simple. The crossover consists of a coil for the mid/bass driver, and a single capacitor for the tweeter, rather than the complex, component laden crossovers that tend to zap sound quality.

The cabinets contain no internal damping, which can dull the sound with a loss of 'liveness'. The result is a speaker that produces a nicely balanced frequency response, sounds as good at low volumes as it does louder volumes, and produces a soundstage that doesn't sound feasible from such a small cabinet.

One thing the little audio company doesn't like in a small speaker is when it tries to dig too deep in the bass, which usually ends up with all sorts of odd bass notes as well as strained ones. The Red K produces the bass you'd expect it to for its size, but doesn't try to step outside of its comfort zone, resulting in a natural, effortless delivery.

The drive units of the Red 50 are a 25mm soft dome HF unit, and a 5" paper based mid/bass driver. Each driver has only one component in its signal path.

As with most loudspeakers, the Red50s are designed to sound their best without grilles, therefore, grilles are an optional extra.

All cabinet panels are constructed of 16mm MDF except for the front panel, which is 19mm.

A 'bracing shelf' placed between the bass driver and the HF unit contains multiple apertures allowing bass through to the reflex port, which is purposely offset to the driver to ensure only bass reaches the port, not midrange energy.

Standing slightly taller than a record sleeve, the cabinet is slightly wider than it is deeper, harking back to an era before speakers became slimmer but a whole lot deeper. At only 8" deep, this little wonder isn't going to encroach too much on your living space, especially as it can live closer to your walls than many other rear ported loudspeakers.

The Red 50 is available in Oak White Baffle, Black Oak Off-Black Baffle, and a Rich Oak Off-Black Baffle finishes.
